Keep it a hobby

The calculators on this site show what prices imply; they cannot make a bet a good idea. Some ground rules that experienced bettors keep:

• Decide a bankroll you can lose entirely and never top it up to chase.
• Stake a fraction of what the Kelly formula suggests; it assumes your probabilities are exactly right, and they never are.
• Arbitrage looks risk-free on paper but carries real risks: a leg that fails to match, a voided bet, a limited account.
• Take breaks and keep records. If you would not show the records to someone you trust, that is a signal.
